5 New Metro Lines and 3 Tram Lines
Panamá plans to have 5 metro lines and 3 tram lines. The 2nd metro line has opened in April 2019 and connects the Tocumen International Airport. The third line will cross the canal and has already been approved.
4th Bridge Across the Canal
The 4th bridge to cross the canal has been approved. It will have 6 traffic lanes and 2 metro lines for the 3rd metro line.
High-speed Rail Link - Panama City to David
A $4.1bn 391km high-speed rail link between Panamá City and David (50km from the border with Costa Rica) will be build with China's assistance. The link will turn a 7 hour journey into 2.5 hours.
New Copper Mine will Add 3% to GDP
At full production (2023), production will surpass 900,000 tonnes a year, placing it among the world’s top six copper producers. Expected to generate around $2 billion worth of annual exports during its 34-years of life.
Panamá Canal Extension
The Panamá Canal Extension was completed in June 2016. It allows for neo-Panamax ships to pass through canal. The canal accounts for 6% of world trade that passes through the canal.
Tocumen International Airport Expansion
The new terminal at Tocumen International Airport opened in April 2019. It increases the number of boarding gates to 54 – up from current 34 gates and the airport can now handle 25m passengers p.a. - up from 15m passengers currently.
New Cruise Liner Terminal
A new cruise liner terminal, on the Pacific side of the canal at the Fuerte Amador Causeway, was officially opened/inaugurated on May 20, 2019.
New Panama Convention Center
The new Panama International Convention Center has opened it's doors in 2021. The facility sits on 13,8 hectares and includes 61,175 sq.m. of configurable and contiguous spaces. It also includes an outdoor amphitheater, a performing arts center, a grand ballroom, an atrium and a capacity for 25,000 guests.
The International Living’s Retirement Index ranks Panamá at No.1 in the world as the best place to retire in 2022, according to expats from the United States who have already made the move.
Yahoo Finance has ranked Panamá as the no 1 choice for retirement in 2020. It says ”Panamá has it all: bustling city life; a beautiful, ecologically diverse climate; quality medical care; and the iconic Panamá Canal. Most people speak English as their second language, after Spanish.”
